Director Mohit Suri, celebrated for crafting the timeless romance Aashiqui 2, has addressed ongoing rumours about his potential return for Aashiqui 3. In a candid chat with Filmygyan, Suri shared why fans may not see him directing the next instalment of the beloved franchise anytime soon.
When asked about reuniting Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor — whose chemistry in Aashiqui 2 had captivated audiences — Suri replied with honesty, noting that while he would love to work with the pair again, the decision ultimately lies with the producers, who, he joked, “don’t want to employ him.”
The filmmaker admitted that the expectation to surpass Aashiqui 2 is a daunting challenge, describing the weight of its success as a “burden on his shoulders.” He emphasised he would only return if he finds a script that truly exceeds the emotional depth and musical magic of the 2013 hit.
Aashiqui 2, with its poignant storytelling, memorable soundtrack, and the lead pair’s electrifying chemistry, became a defining romantic drama of the 2010s, turning Aditya and Shraddha into household names.
Meanwhile, Suri is preparing for the release of his upcoming film Saiyaara, produced by Yash Raj Films. The romantic drama introduces newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda in a heartfelt love story set against the backdrop of music and heartbreak. Ahaan plays Krish, an aspiring singer, while Aneet portrays a passionate songwriter, with music composed by Tanishk Bagchi, Faheem Abdullah, and Arslan Nizami.
The trailer has already garnered praise from industry insiders, including Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. Saiyaara is set to release in theatres on July 18, promising to deliver a fresh yet soulful take on romance with Suri’s signature blend of music and emotional storytelling.
While fans continue to hope for Aashiqui 3 under Mohit Suri’s direction, it is clear the director is in no rush to take on the project unless he discovers a story that can live up to the legacy of Aashiqui 2. Until then, audiences can look forward to experiencing Suri’s world of music and love in Saiyaara later this month.
