When it is fusion and bridal wear that the connoisseurs of fashion are searching for during the coming season then Mrunalini Rao’s “Utpala” collection at The Atelier during Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2020 was the ideal offering.
Starting the show with a bang, was the beautiful Bollywood actress, Athiya Shetty in an ornate, off-white, godet skirt, accentuated by poppy yellow inserts with silver zardozi blooms. A fuchsia pink blouse with a sultry centre cut and a scalloped hemline was stylishly teamed with the skirt and concluded with a printed, sheer yellow dupatta.
Inspired by the lotus flower, known as “Taamara”, the line by Mrunalini was presented in an abstract art form and colours. The detailing was intense and zardozi embroidery and thread work along with appliqués and hand-painted prints were, the focal points of the ensembles.
The rich, lush, bright colours moved smoothly from purple and pink to yellow and green. The fabric line-up matched the elaborate designing, as silk, organza, chiffon and tulle was created into lavish layers and swirling flares. Indian silhouettes were prominent on the models as they glided down the runway.
Dipped in a lovely, lime-yellow shade, a flamboyant lehenga detailed with zardozi blooms in hues like purple and green was teamed with a sensuous blouse, that featured a plunging neckline and a scalloped hem. The sheer yellow cape with printed florals added a contemporary twist to the otherwise traditional look. Another notable entry on the runway was a magnificent, sea green lehenga with hand-painted and digitally printed lotus motifs, which was contrasted with a jacket featuring intricate zardozi work. Dyed in popping fuchsia pink, the look was styled with a rich purple bralette embroidered with shimmery lotus blooms.
For a show-stopping entry, the gorgeous Bollywood actress Ileana D’Cruz strutted on the runway in an ultra-feminine, plunged neckline blouse detailed with eye-catchy, silver lotus motifs. The diaphanous lehenga had a mix of sequinned chevrons and floral embellishments that upped the glam quotient of the outfit.
The beauty of the lotus blooms came alive perfectly for the “Utpala” collection by Mrunalini Rao and will surely be the favourite at many summer weddings too.
