At the much-anticipated trailer launch of Raid 2, Bollywood veteran Ajay Devgn got candid about the challenges the Hindi film industry is currently grappling with in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The actor, who reprises his role as upright IRS officer Amay Patnaik in the sequel to the 2018 hit Raid, addressed the evolving tastes of Indian audiences and the ongoing struggle of filmmakers to decode them.
“We’re still in the process of understanding the changing preferences of the audience,” the actor told reporters. “It’s not entirely clear what draws people to theatres anymore and what doesn’t. However, we do have some insight into how their tastes have evolved post-pandemic. The increased exposure to international content has also played a big role in shaping expectations. As an industry, we’re adapting to this shift and continuously evolving — it’s an ongoing journey of figuring things out.”
Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, Raid 2 promises to celebrate the often-overlooked heroes of the Income Tax Department, delving into a real-life case that highlights their bravery and integrity. With a star-studded ensemble that includes Vaani Kapoor, Rajat Kapoor, and Riteish Deshmukh (playing the antagonist), the film aims to blend high-stakes drama with grounded realism.
But amid the buzz surrounding the trailer, Devgn was refreshingly honest about the industry’s larger crisis — one not limited to Bollywood.“It’s not just Bollywood that’s facing this challenge,” he added. “Across the globe—be it the South film industry, Hollywood, or anywhere else—some films are succeeding while others aren’t. This uncertainty isn’t limited to one industry; it’s a worldwide trend.”
When asked whether steep ticket prices were deterring audiences, Devgn disagreed. “I don’t believe ticket pricing is the issue,” he said. “When audiences are interested, they’re willing to pay the same price to watch a film. It really comes down to their choice — they’re being selective about what they want to watch.” he said, suggesting that content remains the single biggest draw for moviegoers.
“Promotions alone don’t pull them in anymore; it’s the content that matters. If the trailer or teaser resonates with them, or if they connect with the music, they’ll show up. Ultimately, it’s about whether the film offers something they’re genuinely excited to see,” he added.
Backed by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Kumar Mangat Pathak, and Abhishek Pathak under the banners of T-Series and Panorama Studios, Raid 2 is set for a theatrical release on May 1. As anticipation builds for this gritty tax-thriller, Devgn’s remarks serve as a sobering reminder of the flux within the entertainment world — and the ongoing quest to connect with an ever-evolving audience.
