Swar Santati : Khadi ties in the artistic re-interpretations of the Gandhian philosophy

by Team Expresso

Swar Santati is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary. It features multidisciplinary artists that have created works that best represent their interpretation of Mahatma Gandhi and his message, amidst the larger, primary canvas of Khadi, striving not to preach or idolize.

Their work will display, instead, the very core of Gandhi’s message – that another way is possible. With their imagination, they pierce the heart of possibility and come together joined by a common thread, spun with love.

Conceptualised and co-curated by Ms Lavina Baldota along with IGNCA and Swar, the performing arts platform, the exhibition is sponsored by The Abheraj Baldota Foundation.

The exhibition will include Designer & Textile revivalist Gaurang Shah’s interpretation of 30 landmark paintings of Raja Ravi Verma as woven visuals on the pallus of saris in khadi, a light installation on ‘Ahimsa’ using fused salt by Light Designers KLOVE, designer Gaurav Gupta installation – an ode to Mahatma through his search for ‘Truth’, Architect Ashiesh Shah who highlights the “Swadeshi “ movement via an installation that displays objects created by rural artisans using traditional techniques to give new forms, Couturier Jean-François Lesage who shows the influence of Mahatma as he interpret letters written by Gandhi and the route of Dandi March, through couture embroidery on Khadi, poetess Navkirat Sodhi who pays her tribute with an experiential poetry written around theme of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and ideas and Kishore Jhunjhunwala, a leading and avid collector of all objects Gandhi for over 50 years who will display a distinctive part from his private collections.

Additionally, the exhibition will also showcase works from the Museum of Art and Photography. The Raja Ravi Verma Heritage Foundation will also showcase 30 Lithographs of Raja Ravi Verma Paintings from which the khadi sari pallus have been inspired.
