Laapataa Ladies brings Rao back to the director’s chair after a 14-year hiatus, following her debut with Dhobi Ghat. This comedy-drama, set in rural India in 2001, follows the chaotic and humorous journey of two brides, Phool and Jaya, played by Nitanshi Goel and Pratibha Ranta, respectively. The plot thickens as the two women are separated from their husbands during a train journey, leading to a series of comedic misadventures. The film’s ensemble cast also includes talented actors like Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, Geeta Agrawal Sharma, Pankaj Sharma, and Satendra Soni.
Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Laapataa Ladies has already made a significant impact since its release on March 1, 2024. The film has grossed Rs 27.06 crore worldwide, beyond its commercial success, the movie has also received critical acclaim, with a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.
Currently streaming on Netflix, Laapataa Ladies continues to entertain audiences globally, and its upcoming release in Japan is set to further extend its reach. For Kiran Rao, this international release is a testament to the film’s universal appeal, blending humor, culture, and storytelling in a way that resonates across borders.
