“Made in China” is hit the silver screens today. The movie directed by Mikhil Musale and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films. Rajkummar Rao, Mouni Roy, Boman Irani, Pares Rawal took the lead in this film. The movie explores the story of a Gujarati businessman, played by Rao, who goes to China to increase his business prospects. Right before the release of the movie, Rajkummar Rao, Mouni Roy, Boman Irani came to the capital for promoting and sharing their experience, fun which they faced and enjoyed while working in the film. Team Expresso caught up with them in a candid conversation.

Expresso: I saw the trailer and saw the character Dr Vardi which looked very exciting, comical, and I even found the doctor be cute. Would you like to tell us about Dr Vardi?

Boman Irani: Dr Vardi deals with the problem of sex, and he gives advice and would like to treat it like any other doctor in the country or world. If you have a problem with heart then you go to a cardiologist, if you face any problem with ear then you visit ENT specialist. Just like that if you have a problem in your sex life then you must visit Dr Vardi. So this is one of the messages of the film and not to be afraid to go, and medically get yourself looked at if you have issues.

Expresso: So what do you think about this character? Is it very comic or very serious, how is the character like?

Boman Irani: I don’t think that the character has played for any comedy. Let me go back to the movie ‘3 Idiots’ where you found the character very funny, but it was very dark, the character over here is quite calm and happy, he is very giving kind of person. But, he doesn’t mean to be funny, you might find him funny and jolly, viewers might find him funny, his lifestyle might seem funny but he is playing the character of a doctor.

Expresso: The movie has got the title “India Ka Jugaad” so I want to ask you that did you ever made any jugaad in your life that you want to share?

Rajkummar Rao: Well its lovely question and nobody has ever asked me this question. When I used to travel by DTC buses, they used to be overcrowded. So, I somehow managed some jugaad to reach from point A to point B.

Expresso: Do you think that this character is related to you and your journey that has been?

Rajkummar Rao: Well I can find similarity between me and the character Raghuvir as he is quite aspirational who never had plan B and was always ready to seek rejection and seek failure, but he is never going to give up easily. So I can relate with him in all these terms as I am also someone like him in real.

Expresso: We all know that Chinese products don’t have good longevity so do we get to see something desi in the film since the name of the film is ‘Made in China’?

Rajkummar Rao: It is an Indian film, and the whole movie is desi and this is not a Chinese thing and you have to watch the movie. It is a very Indian film, and the language of the film in Hindi too, and you have to experience it. It is Raghu’s journey; how he wanted to do something big in life, how he wanted to be successful in life, and this process how he ends up in China. He gets the secret recipe over there, and then he brings it back to Gujarat India to do establish himself as a businessman.

The characters of the movie are Indian and it’s just that the secret recipe which Raghu finds he gets it from China and brings it back to Ahmedabad, India. From there he decides to start his business. So the film is very much Indian.

Expresso: In the trailer, we have seen that half of the movie has been told about manhood. So is the movie just about comedy or just sex comedy?

Rajkummar Rao: This is not a sex comedy at all rather it is a family entertainment movie. The story of the movie is very beautiful and few roles are there in the movie with whom you will be able to relate yourself. We all try to do something big in life so that we can reach heights of success and Raghu also wanted to become successful since he belonged from a middle-class family. He has tried almost thirteen solutions in life, but nothing helped and lastly on the fourteenth time he found the magic soup. Then he shakes hand with Dr Vardi to increase his business as this requires a lot of motivation.

Expresso: This movie is releasing on the festive season and the other two movies are going to release too. So do you think that the film will do its best?

Rajkummar Rao: It is a big weekend as there are so many days in the weekend and also it is the festive season so people will go out with their families as well as friends and will watch films. So I am sure that every film will do its best and ‘Made in China; will also do a great job and people will like it too.

Expresso: You played the character of a businessman. So according to you what should be the qualities of a good businessman?

Rajkummar Rao: This is the second time I am playing a Gujarati character after ‘Kai Po Che’ and this character is very authentic and real Gujarati character I have played for the first time. Over here I have played the character of a businessman and a good businessman must have enough courage to start anything new and if you want to be successful you must look back. There will be people around you who will discourage you but you must not listen to them.
