Known for his intellectual take on fashion he will pay tribute to French master, Yves Klein inspired by iconic hue Klein Blue, on March 11.
But that’s not all. To take this season’s theme #FashionWearsArt forward, each day at LMIFW AW’20 will have an art-inspired show. FDCI is also working with 12 Italian artists along-with Pearl Academy, where designer students will translate their artworks into a textile in collaboration with artisans, to be presented at an eclectic installation at the venue. We will witness its reverberations through art installations based on textiles by international and Indian designers.
“This year, the theme is a fashion and its inextricable soulmate art, and their endearing relationship that has only ripened over the years, with Elsa Schiaparelli being one of the frontrunners with Salvador Dali and the memorable lobster dress. We hope to create many such pieces that will make it to the coveted list,” said FDCI Chairman Sunil Sethi.

Not only that this year, but the FDCI is also introducing a new space, aptly titled, “Open”, where the velvet ropes have been removed, opening its doors to anyone in the fraternity, in an attempt to foster new ideas. Here concepts will be celebrated, and different perspectives lauded making it an area for conversation, resulting in multiple inspirations. Different mediums from sound, art, as well as scenography will amalgamate with fashion, ensuring an enabling design narrative.![]()
The interesting line up includes — Milind Soman’s Book Launch, ‘Art Minimal’ by Bobo Calcutta, where wearable art is showcased and Kanika Goyal’s ‘Craving Confetti’ glimpse into the mind of the new generation, which views fashion through the lens of vivid brightness. Lastly, ‘Wayfarer’ by Siddhartha Bansal, pays homage to ‘Chintz’ and its provenance.
Talking about this event Chairman of FDCI Sunil Sethi shares, “Fashion has an innate ability to bring about an effective change in what we see around us, as it’s greatly influenced by social, cultural and political revolutions, making it thematic in essence. Through ‘Open’ we hope to explore, evolve and contemplate on these stories through diverse forms of communication, making it both challenging and uplifting.”
He further added, “This year, the LMIFW will have a few art-inspired shows and the Grand Finale will be the jewel in the crown. We have some of India’s best designers, who are creating ensembles based on artworks and this will be one of the most impactful shows of the lineup. As fashion gets an artistic viewpoint, we hope to delight our viewers with something that has always been an integral part of the design world—art, even though it has been more subliminal than overt.

With an obsessive attention to detail, Gaurav showcased his new couture collection ‘Undercurrent’ at FDCI India Couture Week, for which Gaurav has drawn inspiration from the fierce waves of the ocean that flow in a rhythmic, electric concentricity. For the global bride, Gaurav imagined a charismatic, graceful yet playful and well-travelled intellectual who wants to have fun—waltzing in the prismatic corridors of the Hall of Mirrors in multi-layered and cascading bustles along with feathers and corsets, looking like an ethereal goddess.![]()
Epitomising this vision, was a global influencer and founder of Post for Change, Diipa Khosla, who was seen in an unending ethereal lehenga layered in ombre hues of champagne. Handcrafted with 150 meters of organza and finely embroidered with pearls, this poufy skirt is Gaurav’s idea of the updated statement lehenga, paired with a body sculpted off-shoulder blouse. The perfect accent for this was a special Liberation necklace, designed in the shape of wings interwoven together, stylized to project the movement of a bird gracefully taking flight. Each piece of this necklace was set under a microscope, a delicate combination of rose-cut and full-cut diamonds- 8000 pieces in all, created over 8 months. The highlight of this Gaurav Gupta Occasions Fine Jewellery construction is that every feather is scooped from the backside to keep the necklace light on the wearer.![]()
A vision in green-grey, actor Diana Penty concluded the show in the night’s highlight piece, a sculpted mermaid-Esque gown, fashioned in light organza, layered in the brand’s indigenous techniques. Strategically placed all over her look were Japanese iridescent bugle beads that lent an electric, yet feminine glitter to her look. This was accessorised with statement ear cuffs from Gaurav Gupta Occasions Fine Jewellery, sculpting the ear with three exquisitely woven and specially shaped diamonds.![]()
The atelier’s gravity-defying-pattern making is engineered with the anatomical placement of glass embroidery – instilling a feeling of movement and depth of layers, fantasy and dimension. The outfits are perfectly moulded to flatter and fit the body well in degrade shades of violet, lava red. The collection also boasts of bold ivory whites and ecru which the modern bride embraces as she accents it with Gaurav Gupta Occasions Fine Jewellery.
