The Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Stree 2 is on the cusp of a monumental achievement, as it inches just Rs 4 crore short of surpassing Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan to become the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time at the domestic box office. The Amar Kaushik-helmed horror-comedy has proven to be an unstoppable force since its release, collecting a whopping Rs 551.44 crore nett by the end of its fourth weekend. Despite its continued success, Stree 2 may find it difficult to outdo Jawan in total collection across all languages, as the latter holds an impressive Rs 643 crore nett.
Released on August 15, Stree 2 opened with a stellar Rs 64.8 crore nett and continued its dominance with a Week 1 collection of Rs 307.8 crore nett. In its second week, the film maintained its momentum, adding another Rs 145.8 crore nett, followed by Rs 72.83 crore nett in its third week. As it entered the fourth week, Stree 2 raked in Rs 25.01 crore nett, showcasing its staying power at the box office.
Amid Stree 2’s steady rise, the Atlee-directed Jawan, which earned Rs 555 crore nett in 2023, still reigns supreme across Hindi cinema. The action-packed thriller, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, captivated audiences with its intense narrative and spectacular action sequences. While Stree 2 is expected to surpass Jawan domestically in the Hindi market, Jawan’s pan-India success across languages remains a formidable benchmark.
Meanwhile, the box office witnessed another spectacle with the release of The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), starring Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, this action entertainer crossed the Rs 100-crore milestone at the domestic box office over its opening weekend. The film’s Day 1 collection stood at Rs 44 crore nett, with Rs 25.5 crore nett added on Day 2. By the end of the weekend, GOAT had accumulated Rs 137.2 crore nett, further solidifying its stronghold.
A significant chunk of GOAT’s earnings came from its Tamil version, which contributed Rs 121.05 crore nett. The Hindi version followed with Rs 8.3 crore nett, while the Telugu version brought in Rs 7.85 crore nett. Thalapathy Vijay’s star power, combined with Venkat Prabhu’s direction, ensured that GOAT made a solid impression in both regional and national markets.
As Stree 2 continues its dream run, the film’s success highlights the growing appeal of horror comedies in Indian cinema, a genre that Maddock Films’ supernatural universe has mastered. The Stree franchise, beginning with the 2018 original, has become a cornerstone of this universe, blending horror, comedy, and social commentary in a way that resonates deeply with audiences.
With both Stree 2 and GOAT captivating fans nationwide, the Indian box office is thriving with a diverse range of genres. The coming weeks will determine whether Stree 2 can claim the top spot, and whether GOAT can maintain its pace and break further records.
