In a recent interview on Cyrus Broacha’s Housing.com YouTube channel, Soha Ali Khan shed light on the fascinating history of Pataudi Palace, the family’s regal abode that stands as a testament to their storied past. Managed primarily by her brother, Saif Ali Khan, the palace has been a subject of intrigue and admiration due to its historical significance and royal lineage.
Soha, who is the daughter of the iconic actress Sharmila Tagore and the late cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, delved into the practical aspects of maintaining the grand residence. She revealed that instead of opting for traditional painting, Saif prefers a cost-effective whitewash for the palace. This approach not only conserves resources but also preserves the authentic charm of the historic building.
“My mother sits with her hisaab-kitaab; she knows daily expenditure and monthly expenditure. For example, we whitewash Pataudi, it’s not painted because it’s a lot less expensive,” Soha explained. This meticulous financial management by their mother underscores the family’s commitment to maintaining their heritage while being mindful of expenses.
Soha, who was born after the privy purses and royal titles were abolished in 1970, reflects on the historical burden of such titles. Her brother Saif, born in the same year, inherited the title of prince, which, as Soha mentions, came with its own set of responsibilities and financial obligations. “With the titles comes a lot of responsibility and bills,” she noted.
She also shared intriguing details about the palace’s history. Soha revealed that their grandfather, Nawab Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, faced financial constraints while constructing the palace, which is why the interiors feature carpets in place of marble in some areas. Despite these financial challenges, the palace stands as a remarkable example of royal architecture.
Soha’s role in the family involves managing the ‘generator room,’ a modest two-BHK space, highlighting the blend of royal heritage with practical responsibilities. The estate, which is also known as Ibrahim Kothi, is situated in Pataudi, Haryana, and spans 10 acres with 150 rooms, including several dressing rooms, bedrooms, and billiard rooms.
Currently owned by Saif Ali Khan and his wife, actor Kareena Kapoor, Pataudi Palace was once the property of Saif’s father before being acquired back by him from a hotel company. The palace, which now serves as a luxurious vacation home, has also become a popular location for film productions. Recent shoots for the film Animal and Saif’s streaming series Tandav took place at this iconic property, further showcasing its grandeur.
The palace’s blend of history, heritage, and modern use encapsulates the evolving legacy of the Pataudi family, making Pataudi Palace not just a residence, but a symbol of enduring royal charm and familial pride.
