Maddock Films’ newly released track Mashooqa from the upcoming film Cocktail 2 has sparked debate online after several social media users alleged that the song resembles a 1993 Italian track titled Se So Arrubate A Nonna. Featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, the romantic song has been receiving praise for its visuals and chemistry, but discussions around its music have quickly taken over the internet.
The controversy began after a Reddit user shared comparison clips of Mashooqa and the Italian song, claiming that both tunes sounded strikingly similar. Several users joined the discussion, with comments such as, “Bollywood copying again?” and “It sounds same.” Another user joked, “Pritam can’t stop copying lol.”
However, many users defended composer Pritam, arguing that the song could be an example of sampling rather than plagiarism. One Reddit user explained that sampling is a common music industry practice where portions of older tracks are reworked with new arrangements and lyrics.
The original song, Se So Arrubate A Nonna, was released in 1993 by Italian duo Bibi & Coco as part of their album Le Origini Vol. 2. Though not globally popular, the track has maintained a cult following over the years.
Despite the online debate, fans continue to appreciate the pairing of Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 also stars Rashmika Mandanna and is scheduled to release in theatres on June 19.
