The tragic and brutal rape-murder of a young trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has ignited a wave of outrage and calls for justice across India. The victim, a post-graduate trainee doctor, was found in a semi-nude state in a seminar hall on Friday morning, her body bearing multiple injury marks. Preliminary autopsy reports have confirmed signs of sexual abuse before her murder.

The gravity of this horrific incident has spurred widespread reactions from a range of public figures, including students, activists, politicians, and celebrities. Their collective condemnation highlights deep-seated concerns over women’s safety and the handling of gender crimes in India.

Calls for Justice and Accountability

Bollywood actress Richa Chadha has been vocal in her demand for justice. Taking to Twitter, she urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the case. “The women of this country expect a fair and impartial investigation from you @MamataOfficial, and swift justice. You’re the only woman currently to occupy the post of Chief Minister. #JusticeForMoumita,” Chadha wrote, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability.

Similarly, actress and politician Kangana Ranaut has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. In an Instagram story, Ranaut expressed her horror at the crime and criticized the current investigation efforts. “The murder of a trainee woman doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata is horrible and horrific. I hope the case is transferred to the CBI for a complete inquiry and the assaulter is punished harshly,” Ranaut stated.

Swara Bhasker, another prominent actress, also voiced her outrage on Twitter. She described the crime as a “gruesome & horrifying” reminder of the pervasive issues faced by women in India. Bhasker criticized both the societal treatment of women and the failures of hospital authorities and infrastructure. “It’s a painful reminder that India is no country for women. The accused must be put on trial and justice must be served speedily. Solidarity with the protesting doctors of our country! #KolkataDoctorDeath,” Bhasker tweeted.

Legal and Institutional Responses

In response to the public outcry and demands for a more rigorous investigation, the Calcutta High Court has intervened, ordering the transfer of the case from Kolkata Police to the CBI. This move aims to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into the crime, addressing the widespread concerns about the adequacy of local police handling.

As the case progresses, the call for justice continues to resonate strongly among the public and public figures alike. The tragic death of the young doctor has become a rallying point for those advocating for stronger measures to protect women and ensure that perpetrators of such heinous crimes are held accountable.
