I would love to be a part of movies like ‘Khiladi’ : Sunny Singh

by Team Expresso
Sunny Singh has had a whirlwind in 2019 with four back to back release with De De Pyaar De, Jhoota Kahin Ka, Ujda Chaman and Pati Patni Aur Woh. This new year he is all set to entertain us with his light-hearted family comedy, Jai Mummy Di. This movie will show how conflicting dynamics between the mothers lead to muddled chemistry between their own children and other members of both families’. Written and directed by Navjot Gulati, the comedy-drama is set to hit the theatres on January 17, 2020. Right before the release, we caught up with Sunny in a candid conversation.

Expresso:  What connected you with the movie?

Sunny: I would say that it is Luv Ranjan sir. He is a very friendly and jolly person I have ever met. He always comes with surprises and I am lucky that he has offered me this lead role in the movie. I guess it is the dream of every actor to get a lead role in their career, and Luv Ranjan sir has made my dream successful. Also, when I heard that Sonnalli Seygall is working in the movie, I was very much excited too. Overall I loved the concept that what happens when a mother interferes in a relationship, marriages, etc.

Expresso: How is your chemistry with Luv Ranjan since it is your fourth film with him?

Sunny: I would say that I have a connection that a student has with his teacher. I guess he understands all the things and supports me every time whenever I face any problem.

Expresso: How is your experience working with Supriya Pathak and Poonamji?

Sunny: Both of them are extremely talented and they are amazing, and my favourite as well. Whenever someone talks about them, I can only imagine the scenes of the movies in which they have worked before. If I talk about Supriya mam, then I would say she is dedicated to her work and tries to give her a hundred per cent into the work. The same goes for Poonamji because she is very charming and friendly. The best part is you would always feel like at home whenever you are working with them.

Expresso: Do you relate yourself to the character?

Sunny: I relate myself since my character Puneet is Punjabi and so am I. I have always seen the problems with relationships and how it complicates with the involvement of a mother. I think the director of the movie has also at a certain point connected with the problem, and that is why he came up with this story.

Expresso: What was your mother’s reaction after watching the trailer?

Sunny: Well my mother was quite happy with the concept of the movie, and she is super excited and happy since it is made from a mother’s perspective. So, she can make a quick connection with the movie. Also, she was extremely happy since I first time got an offer for a solo film.

Expresso: How would you describe your mother?

Sunny: Mothers are by nature protective and the same goes for my mother as well. She still now asks me where I am going and when I will return. A mother does a lot of things for her child and loves her unconditionally, and my mother still now does the same thing for me.

Expresso: Do you find any similarity between your real mom or reel mom?

Sunny: I did not find any difference between the real mom and reel mom. My real-life mother and reel life mother have always been protective, and have blessed me always. I have always found that drama and fights for both of my mothers, and I find it quite interesting and beautiful.

Expresso: Is there anything that you have not shared with your mother?

Sunny: I never say about the person with whom I am talking to.

Expresso: Say something about your characters that you have portrayed earlier?

Sunny: I would say ‘Chauka’ is my favourite one from ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’. The reason behind my choice is because it gave a potential and thrust to my career as from that movie people started knowing me properly.

Expresso: If not an actor then what would you be?

Sunny: I guess I would have been in the army if I would not have been an actor.

Expresso: What kind of films would you like to be a part of?

Sunny: I would love to be a part of movies like ‘Khiladi’, if any director comes up with a sequel of ‘Kapaat’ or ‘Phool Aur Kaante’, then I would work in those movies.

Expresso: What is your dream role?

Sunny: The role that Shahrukh Khan played in the movie ‘Darr’.

Expresso: Did you do any such work when you were a child and felt embarrassing after getting caught?

Sunny: I would say that I have done a lot of notorious things in my childhood. I can share one such incident.

What I did was, after getting inspired by a movie I asked my friend to look for money here and there in his home; for e.g., over the fridge, or anywhere else. In this way, we managed to collect Rs. 100 – Rs.200 and with that, we bought a belt of WWF and got Thumbs-up for free.

While we were enjoying the drink we saw that my friend’s mother is running towards us in anger with a slipper in her hand. When my mother came to know about it I felt very embarrassed.

Expresso: You began your career with serial and now you are an actor so how was your journey?

Sunny: I have only done two serials as far as I remember since I always wanted to become an actor. Also, at that time I was quite young to get a platform in the industry. After then, I came out of the serials and started my journey with modelling and theatre. After a while, I got a chance in a movie. Finally met Luv sir and now I am here as he helped me a lot. You have to have patience, consistency, and faith as well as do the reality check if you want to achieve something in your life.

Expresso: Describe yourself in three words.

Sunny: I would say I am honest, pure, and charming.
