Ten years ago, a small film with a big heart changed the course of Ayushmann Khurrana’s career. On the 10th anniversary of Dum Laga Ke Haisha, the actor took a moment to reflect on his journey, penning an emotional note to his younger self.
A Message to His Younger Self
Marking the milestone, Ayushmann took to Instagram and shared a heartfelt letter addressed to his younger self. He began by reassuring the dreamer within him, writing: “Slow down, you crazy child. You will be fine. You will see the vagaries of life, the ups and the downs, and you will emerge stronger.”
The actor, now 40, reflected on the unpredictable nature of the industry, emphasizing that success is not just about box office numbers. “The goal is not to look at scoring hits. There is a far bigger plan,” he added.

From Struggles to Stardom
Before Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Ayushmann faced a rough patch with consecutive flops like Nautanki Saala (2013), Bewakoofiyan (2014), and Hawaizaada (2015). However, the release of Dum Laga Ke Haisha on February 27, 2015, proved to be a turning point, reaffirming his faith in storytelling and unique narratives.
Addressing his younger self, he advised, “Don’t be anxious. Everything will turn out to be okay. Dum Laga Ke Haisha, this small film with a big heart, is going to touch countless lives across India and tell everyone to fall in love again.”
A Film That Broke Stereotypes
Written and directed by Sharat Katariya, Dum Laga Ke Haisha follows the journey of Prem (Ayushmann), a small-town man coerced into marrying Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar), an overweight woman. Initially reluctant, Prem gradually learns to accept and love his wife, making the film a poignant tale of acceptance, love, and personal growth. The film beautifully challenged societal norms surrounding body image and relationships.
Bhumi Pednekar’s Debut and Stellar Supporting Cast
The film not only rejuvenated Ayushmann’s career but also marked the debut of Bhumi Pednekar, who delivered a powerhouse performance. The stellar supporting cast included Sheeba Chaddha, Sanjay Mishra, Alka Amin, Kumar Sanu, Seema Pahwa, and Shrikant Verma, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.
A Reminder to Stay True
In his closing words, Ayushmann encouraged his younger self to stay grounded and trust his instincts: “Please be true to your roots and true to your gut. You are God’s favorite child. Slow down, you crazy child.”
What’s Next for Ayushmann?
Currently, Ayushmann is gearing up for his next venture, the horror-comedy Thama, which is part of the Maddock Supernatural Universe. As he continues to push boundaries, Dum Laga Ke Haisha remains a testament to the power of unconventional stories and staying true to one’s artistic vision.
