Shraddha Kapoor’s much-awaited upcoming film Eetha, inspired by the life of legendary Lavani artiste Vithabai Narayangaonkar, has landed in controversy ahead of its theatrical release. The film has sparked debate after objections were raised over its title, with both political leaders and the late performer’s family questioning why the biopic was not named directly after Vithabai herself.

The controversy began after the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Film and Cultural Department reportedly questioned the makers’ decision to title the film Eetha instead of choosing a name that directly honored the iconic folk performer. According to reports, the department believes that a biographical film based on Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s life should have been titled Vitha or Vithabai, arguing that the title should reflect the artiste’s immense contribution to Maharashtra’s cultural heritage.

The issue has now gained further attention after Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s family also voiced similar concerns regarding the title. Reports suggest that her sons, Kailash Narayangaonkar and Rajesh Narayangaonkar, along with grandson Mohit Narayangaonkar, have expressed disappointment over the makers’ choice, stating that the title Eetha does not give proper recognition to the woman whose extraordinary life inspired the film.

The family has reportedly maintained that since the film chronicles Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s journey and legacy, it should carry her name and appropriately acknowledge the contribution she made toward preserving India’s traditional folk performance culture. They have also sought clarification from the filmmakers regarding the reasoning behind the title and whether it truly represents the story of the legendary performer.

As of now, neither Shraddha Kapoor nor the makers of the film have issued any official statement addressing the controversy.

Vithabai Narayangaonkar remains one of Maharashtra’s most celebrated Lavani and Tamasha artistes. Widely admired for her powerful stage presence and unforgettable performances, she played a crucial role in popularising the traditional folk art forms across the state and continues to be remembered as one of Maharashtra’s most influential cultural icons.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, Eetha stars Shraddha Kapoor in the lead role and is based on the inspiring life and struggles of Vithabai Narayangaonkar. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on August 28, but the title controversy has now added fresh debate around one of the year’s most anticipated projects.
