The much-discussed biopic on legendary Carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi appears to be back in the spotlight. Reports about the project have been circulating for quite some time, with filmmaker Gowtam Tinnanuri, known for directing the acclaimed sports drama Jersey, reportedly attached to direct the film.

Earlier, actresses Sai Pallavi and Rukmini Vasanth were said to be among the frontrunners being considered for the coveted role. However, updates on the project had gradually slowed down, causing the buzz around the biographical drama to fade.

Now, fresh reports suggest that Rashmika Mandanna has emerged as a strong contender to portray the iconic musician on the big screen. According to industry sources, the actress recently underwent a look test for the role, reigniting excitement surrounding the project.

While the makers have yet to make an official announcement regarding the casting, sources close to the development claim that Rashmika participated in a costume-based look test at her residence. The actress was reportedly dressed in traditional attire associated with MS Subbulakshmi’s signature look, with a noted stylist overseeing the session.

Sources indicate that Rashmika’s expressions and distinctive features align well with the character, making her a promising choice for the role. She is reportedly keen on the project, although the casting process has not been completely finalized.

If the casting materialises, the project would mark the first biopic of Rashmika Mandanna’s career. Portraying MS Subbulakshmi would undoubtedly be one of the most prestigious and challenging roles for the actress, given the singer’s unparalleled legacy in Indian music.

MS Subbulakshmi remains one of India’s most celebrated cultural icons. She made history as the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, and was also the first Indian musician to perform at the United Nations General Assembly. The proposed biopic aims to chronicle her extraordinary life, musical journey, and enduring contribution to Indian classical music.

Meanwhile, Rashmika continues to strengthen her position as one of the most sought-after stars in Indian cinema. Over the years, she has carefully balanced mainstream commercial entertainers with content-driven and female-centric projects, earning appreciation from audiences across languages and regions.

Following The Girlfriend, the actress has reportedly begun work on the action thriller Mysaa. Known for embracing diverse characters and challenging narratives, Rashmika continues to expand her filmography while connecting with a wide spectrum of viewers.

Although an official confirmation regarding the biopic is still awaited, reports of Rashmika Mandanna’s look test have already generated considerable excitement. If finalized, the collaboration could bring one of India’s most revered musical legends to life on the silver screen through one of contemporary cinema’s most popular actresses.
