The buzz around a Chaalbaaz remake has been going strong for years, but what’s really got everyone talking is the possibility of Janhvi Kapoor stepping into the iconic double role that her mother, the legendary Sridevi, made unforgettable. With so many producers eager to cast Janhvi in this powerhouse part, Boney Kapoor recently opened up about the craze and the challenges involved.
“I have no idea if Janhvi has committed, but many people have been after her for Chaalbaaz,” Boney Kapoor revealed with a smile. “More than three producers approached her, and the fourth was me.” Clearly, everyone is lining up for what could be one of the most talked-about remakes in recent times.
However, Boney Kapoor made it clear that it’s not as simple as it sounds. “It’s not an easy film to do. We have to upscale it, modernize it, and make it relevant for today’s audience,” he explained. After all, Chaalbaaz is more than just a movie — it’s a legacy that blends comedy, drama, and that unbeatable Sridevi magic.
Over the years, the project has seen several twists. At one point, there were reports of a Chaalbaaz set in London with Shraddha Kapoor in the lead, but that version never took off. On the matter, Boney Kapoor remained tight-lipped, saying, “I can’t comment on that.”
Interestingly, Janhvi Kapoor wasn’t the only actress Boney had in mind. “I was very keen on doing it with Deepika Padukone once,” he revealed, “but it didn’t materialize.” Now, though, with producers clamoring for Janhvi, the excitement is palpable.
That said, Boney Kapoor feels it’s all “too premature” for now. He added that he hasn’t even discussed the project with Janhvi yet because of his travels. So far, it looks like we’ll have to wait before any official announcement.
The original Chaalbaaz, directed by Pankaj Parashar, released in 1989, remains a timeless classic. Sridevi’s unforgettable performance as the timid Anju and the fearless Manju, alongside Rajinikanth and Sunny Deol, turned the film into a massive hit and a cult favorite, celebrated for its perfect blend of comedy and drama.
