The actress has also shared a behind-the-scenes video from the photoshoot, offering a glimpse into the meticulous process of recreating the iconic looks of M.S. Subbulakshmi.
Vidya’s tribute, marked by elegance and respect, showcases the grandeur and grace associated with M.S. Subbulakshmi, who is remembered not only for her unparalleled contributions to music but also for her distinctive sartorial style. The photoshoot, a collaboration with renowned costume designer Anu Parthasarathy, features Vidya donning some of the late singer’s most memorable outfits.

In the video, Vidya is seen getting the finishing touches on her makeup and reviewing her shots on the monitor. The attention to detail in the recreation of M.S. Subbulakshmi’s looks is evident, with Anu Parthasarathy meticulously crafting the saris and accessories. The ensemble includes M.S. Subbulakshmi’s signature double nose studs set in diamonds, a high bun adorned with jasmine (gajra), and the traditional double bindi.
Vidya’s Instagram post accompanying the tribute highlighted the significance of the feature: “This feature showcases four saris that M.S. Amma wore and popularised between the 1960s and the ’80s and is a portrayal of M.S. Amma’s concert persona.” The saris, woven specially for this shoot, reflect the rich, iridescent blue hues that M.S. Subbulakshmi was known for, forever linked to her mesmerizing performances.

The tribute also acknowledges the valuable guidance provided by Mala Chandrasekhar, a renowned flautist and granddaughter-in-law of M.S. Subbulakshmi. Vidya expressed her deep gratitude for Mala’s assistance in ensuring the authenticity of the portrayal.
M.S. Subbulakshmi, honored as the ‘Nightingale of India’ by Sarojini Naidu, began her illustrious career at the tender age of 11. Her numerous accolades include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Bhushan. She was the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna and the Ramon Magsaysay award.
Following the death of her husband, Kalki Sadasivam, in 1997, she retired from public performances, with her final concert taking place the same year. M.S. Subbulakshmi passed away on December 11, 2004, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
