Review: While being isolated in this lockdown period we have nothing much to other than spending time on OTT platform. There are some great originals out there that you can easily add in must watch bucket list. Both seasons of Bengali web original Kaali is no exceptional. After promising with the season 1 of Kaali, director duo Rohan Ghosh and Aritra Sen’s, most awaited bilingual series Kaali 2 released on Zee5 29th May 2020.
The first season of crime thriller “Kaali” received a huge response from the audience. While the first season ended on a spine-chiller and the exciting ending left the audience in suspense and anxious so that they do not to miss the next, the second season of Kaali takes the story forward. Kaali revolves around a mother’s journey who is determined to save the life of her son and risks her own life to an extreme level.
Kaali season 2 begins with Kaali aka Paoli Dam’s new life as Aparna Sen after a critical night at the Nightingale hospital six months ago. In this season, she is not just a parlour-waali, now she is a salon owner in Kolkata. But, the darkness of her past life still accompanies her. She lives with her only son Sunny, who is recovering after a life-threatening accident. Now Sunny’s only help is an oxygen cylinder.
While the first season was strongly set into Kolkata’s underbelly, the second season further involves the drug kingpins from across the border. The model of the storyline is a game between drug lords, special brunch of Kolkata police, gangs and a lone survivor ordinary girl whose one and only son has a near-to-death experience. Unlike our other familiarities of Kolkata, we see a different one in this process. In season 2 we saw the whole story from viewpoint of a contender.
As the first season was more intriguing in every manner so one must find some unwanted facts, that don’t need to be told. The director duo should have emitted those things for sure. But, this season has a very tricky flashback, which put into the storyline very cleverly. However, you feel very connected when you see Paoli Dam as Kaali. She was at her best whenever she appears on each scene. Her performance was the most valuable thing for this series. She gains more and more respect with her fierce full acting and even more astonishing expression. This season has added new faces over the industry, which will come as a worthy of selection. Abhishek Banerjee aka drug lord Sonu has moved us with his role as expected. Though the errors in writing, the Paatal Lok actor was brilliant in his own essence of mannerism.
On the other side, Chandan Roy Sanyal as Swapan and Vidya Malvade as DCP Manvi Gupta came along in the series as a part to be hooked up with this web original. Like in the first season, a special branch officer Aniket, Rahul Banerjee also did an impressive job too. His chemistry with Paoli has added an extra flavour to the show.
To enhance the drama there is a beautifully engaging background score to cope up with. Though it has many subplots, Kaali has its own firmness. As it seems in the beginning that it has much more to offer, but in the world of Paatal Lok, Sacred Games, and other spine chilling thriller, it has lost its control towards the end. But, there is no harm to watch another series and also you have nothing much to do amidst lockdown!
