Burma Burma Brings Six Regional Khowsueys to the Table This Winter

Warm up this season with Burma Burma’s ‘Comfort Is Khowsuey’ menu, featuring handcrafted noodles, soulful broths and regional Burmese flavours.

by Team Expresso

Winter calls for warmth, depth of flavour, and meals that linger long after the last spoonful. This season, Burma Burma invites diners to slow down and savour Burma’s most iconic comfort food with its limited-edition winter menu, ‘Comfort Is Khowsuey’, available from December 1, 2025, to January 31, 2026.

At the heart of this seasonal showcase is Khowsuey — a dish that, in Burmese, simply means noodles, yet across the country represents so much more. From breakfast bowls that gently wake the senses to street-side favourites enjoyed at bustling stalls, tea-shop staples shared among friends, and celebratory meals steeped in nostalgia, Khowsuey is woven deeply into Burma’s culinary fabric.

Six Regions, Six Stories, One Beloved Bowl

Curated by Head Chef Ansab Khan and his culinary team, the menu is the result of over 12 years of travel across Burma, guided by local cooks, chefs, and custodians of Burmese food heritage. Each of the six Khowsuey bowls reflects a distinct regional style, carrying with it flavours, memories, and stories collected along the way.

The winter selection includes:

  • Oh No Khowsuey – Burma Burma’s award-winning signature dish, rooted in a cherished home-style heritage recipe. A creamy coconut milk curry infused with lemongrass and tamarind, topped with vegetables and served with a choice of hakka, whole wheat, udon or rice noodles, alongside an array of condiments.

  • Grandma’s Famous Khowsuey – A heartfelt homage to co-founder Ankit Gupta’s ancestral hometown, Prom (now Pyay). This mild, comforting curry blends coconut milk and toasted peanuts, poured over noodles and finished with tomatoes, fried onions, chilli-garlic oil and onion fritters.

  • Downtown Khowsuey – Inspired by the vibrant energy of downtown Yangon, this bold and robust version features a spicy curry with udon noodles, chunks of mock meat, and crisp fried wonton sheets.

  • Shwe Taung Khowsuey – A lighter, soupy bowl inspired by a historic recipe created by U Thein Shwe at Expo ’70 in Osaka and later popularised in the mountain town of Shwe Taung. Served with mock meat, crispy noodles, and a side of reduced coconut milk to adjust richness to taste.

  • No Ze Khowsuey – A surprising twist on the classic, replacing coconut milk with an aromatic evaporated milk-based curry. Often considered a sibling to Oh No Khowsuey, it is served with rice noodles and a crisp spring roll filled with sweet corn and onion.

  • Dry Khowsuey – A crowd favourite packed with intense flavours, featuring hand-tossed rice noodles with gram flour, roasted red chilli, garlic and tamarind, accompanied by crunchy corn crisps.

Each bowl is served with a generous selection of toppings — crushed peanuts, lemon, spring onions, red chilli flakes, fried onions and fried garlic — allowing diners to customise every bite. More garlic? Extra heat? A squeeze of citrus? The bowl is yours to make.

Whether enjoyed during a leisurely lunch, a celebratory dinner, a cosy date, or even as solace during a quiet, reflective moment, these Khowsuey bowls are designed to comfort. With noodles made in-house and broths simmered slowly for depth and richness, the experience is unapologetically soulful — best enjoyed hunched over a bowl, slurping till the very last drop, inevitable splashes included.
