Acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta passed away following a tragic accident in Kolkata. According to reports, the director was admitted to a hospital on Wednesday after allegedly falling from the roof of his residence in the Gariahat area and suffering critical injuries.

Anik Dutta was widely regarded as one of the notable contemporary voices in Bengali cinema. He was the grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta, the founder of United Bank of India.

The filmmaker made his directorial debut in 2012 with Bhooter Bhabishyat, a fantasy comedy-horror film that went on to achieve cult status among audiences. The film was praised for its satirical storytelling, humour, and ensemble cast, establishing Dutta as a distinctive filmmaker in the Bengali film industry.

Over the years, Anik Dutta built a strong filmography with projects such as Aschorjo Prodip, Meghnad Badh Rahasya, Borunbabur Bondhu, and Aparajito – The Undefeated. His films often reflected political commentary, social observations, and a signature blend of satire and humour.

Dutta was also known for being deeply influenced by legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, with several of his cinematic choices and storytelling techniques drawing inspiration from the iconic director’s style. His last theatrical release, Joto Kando Kolkatatei, released in cinemas in September 2025.
