Legendary Filmmaker Basu Chatterjee Passes Away; Bollywood Mourns His Sad Demise

B-Town lost another legendary filmmaker, Basu Chatterjee who was well known for directing several films like Choti Si Baat, Rajnigandha, Baaton Baaton Mein, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, passed today in Mumbai due to age-related disorders at the age of 90.

The last rites of the veteran film-maker was performed later this afternoon at the Santacruz Crematorium.

Film Maker and Indian Film & TV Directors’ Association president Ashoke Pandit had posted a black and white picture of the ace filmmaker and shared, ”I am extremely grieved to inform you all of the demises of Legendary Filmmaker #BasuChatterjee ji. His last rites will be performed today at Santacruz crematorium at 2 pm. It’s a great loss to the industry. Will miss you Sir. #RIPBasuChaterjee”

On the other hand Reminiscing Basu Chatterjee, filmmaker Sudhir Misra shared, “Every day brings with it some bad news! You were part of my childhood Dada. Humane, gentle, witty! These days you are the main inspiration for a lot of young filmmakers. They are mimicking your films.N they lie when they say different films didn’t work in the past. Yours did !”.

Shabana Azmi tweeted, ”Deeply saddened to hear about Basu Chatterjee’s passing away. A prolific filmmaker, he was the pioneer of what came to be regarded as the middle of the road cinema. I was fortunate to have done 3 lovely films with him Swami Apne Paraye and Jeena Yahan. All lifelike characters.RIP”

Shoojit Sircar shares, ”My 1st job as an assistant director was with Basu Chatterjee for a Bengali tv serial shot in CR Park, New Delhi. May his soul Rest In Peace.”

Amitabh Bachchan grieved and shares, “Prayers and Condolences on the passing of Basu Chatterjee .. a quiet, soft-spoken, gentle human .. his films reflected the lives of middle India .. did ‘MANZIL’ with him .. a sad loss .. .. in these climes often remembered for ‘rim jhim gire saawan’

Madhur Bhandarkar shared on Twitter, “Sad to hear the demise of Veteran Filmmaker Shri.Basu Chatterjee. Will be always remembered for his Light-Hearted comedies & Simplistic Films. #OmShanti”

Divya Dutta tweeted, “O god!! RIP .. Thankyou for those smiles and amazingly feel good films.. and simplicity..Thank you for adding the flavour to movies! You will be missed dada!”

Aamir Khan paid his condolence and tweeted, “Really sorry to hear the sad news of Basu Chatterjee passing away. My heartfelt condolences to Basuda’s family and friends. His contribution to Indian Cinema will always be remembered.”
Shubhash Ghai wrote, “RIP #basu chatterjee. ‪A great humanist unique story teller n a friend I learnt a lot from him in 70s. ‬‪I can see his kind of cinema coming back today with high concept low budget movies with simplistic real life characters with humorous situations n stories. ‬‪Great guy 🙏🏽 ‬he will be remembered thru his unique movie. 👍”

The author turned director Ram Kamal Mukerjee shares, “This is a big loss! You will be missed for your simple and yet memorable films. I have been an ardent fan of your work and loved the way you changed the style of narrative in Hindi cinema. We will miss you #BasuChatterjee sir! #RestinPeace.

Basu Chatterjee’s films were considered to be more realistic. He worked jointly with Amol Palekar on several films like Choti Si Baat, Rajnigandha and Chitchor.

He also teamed up with Amitabh Bachchan in Manzil, Rajesh Khanna in Chakravyuh, Dev Anand in Man Pasand. In 1992, he was honoured with National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare for Durga. Earlier, Basu Chatterjee directed two super hit serials on Doordarshan such as Byomkesh Bakshi and Rajani. Amid this lockdown, Byomkesh Bakshi was re-telecasted on television.
