Actor Ranveer Singh visited the revered Chamundeshwari Temple in Karnataka this week after directions issued by the Karnataka High Court in connection with the controversy surrounding his remarks and mimicry related to the Kantara franchise.

During the temple visit, Ranveer reportedly took part in religious rituals and offered prayers at the shrine located atop Chamundi Hills. His visit comes months after he faced criticism for recreating a sacred sequence associated with the Kantara universe during a public appearance.

The controversy began in December last year at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India in Goa. During the event, Ranveer imitated a ritual-inspired moment from the film and allegedly referred to sacred daivas as “ghosts,” which triggered strong reactions online after clips from the event surfaced on social media.

Several viewers and followers of the tradition called the act insensitive, considering the spiritual and cultural significance attached to the rituals depicted in the film. Reacting to the issue at the time, filmmaker and actor Rishab Shetty had stated, “That makes me uncomfortable. While much of the film is cinema and performance, the Daiva element is sensitive and sacred.”

The matter later reached the Karnataka High Court. In April, Ranveer Singh reportedly submitted a revised affidavit before the court regarding the case. Observing progress toward resolving the issue, the court directed the actor to visit the Chamundeshwari Temple and offer prayers within a period of four weeks.

Earlier, Ranveer had also issued a public apology over the incident. In a statement shared on Instagram, he wrote, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

The Kantara franchise, created by Rishab Shetty, has earned widespread recognition across India for its depiction of regional folklore and spiritual traditions from coastal Karnataka. The original film became a major success upon its release in 2022, while the franchise’s prequel also reportedly performed strongly at the box office.

Ranveer Singh’s temple visit has now become a key development in the ongoing matter, which continues to draw attention from both legal and cultural circles.
