Shraddha Kapoor has officially begun shooting for her upcoming biopic Eetha, directed by Laxman Utekar. The film brings to life the extraordinary journey of Vithabai Narayangaonkar, one of Maharashtra’s most celebrated Tamasha and Lavani performers. Production for the film commenced on November 1, 2025.

The title Eetha draws inspiration from the regional pronunciation of “Vitha,” a name affectionately used for the legendary artist in parts of rural Maharashtra. Known for her unmatched charisma on stage and deep cultural impact, Vithabai remains an enduring symbol of folk artistry and resilience.

Born in July 1935 in Pandharpur, Solapur district, Vithabai was raised in a family steeped in traditional Marathi folk theatre. She began performing at a young age and soon rose to prominence as a powerful Tamasha performer, renowned for her commanding stage presence, soulful singing, and captivating energy. Her artistry transcended entertainment—she represented the voice and vibrancy of rural Maharashtra.

Over the course of her career, Vithabai was honoured twice with the President’s Award, in 1957 and 1990, for her contribution to Indian folk culture. Her name continues to evoke admiration and nostalgia, symbolizing an era when live performance was both an art form and a lifeline for countless communities.

Director Laxman Utekar, known for blending realism and emotion in films like Zara Hatke Zara Bachke and Luka Chuppi, is expected to explore not just Vithabai’s illustrious career but also the personal struggles that shaped her life offstage. With Eetha, Utekar aims to capture the essence of a woman whose strength, artistry, and perseverance defined an entire cultural movement.

For Shraddha Kapoor, this project marks another step in her evolving filmography—balancing commercial success with character-driven storytelling. Her most recent release, Stree 2, became one of the highest-grossing films of the year, earning over ₹500 crore globally. She is also set to reprise her role in Stree 3, slated for an August 2027 release, and is reportedly preparing for Naagin, an ambitious fantasy trilogy in which she plays the titular role.

With Eetha, Shraddha Kapoor steps into the shoes of a woman who changed the face of folk performance in India—a portrayal that promises both depth and authenticity, honouring the legacy of a true cultural icon.
