Actor Fatima Sana Shaikh has expressed concern over Mumbai’s proposed revision of entertainment tax rates, questioning whether rising costs could make regular cinema visits unaffordable for audiences.
Speaking at an event, Fatima was asked about the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) proposal to significantly increase entertainment tax on air-conditioned cinema halls and multiplexes. Under the proposed structure, the tax on AC cinemas and multiplexes would increase from Rs 60 to Rs 400 per ticket, representing an approximately 570 per cent rise.
The proposal is yet to receive the necessary approval and notification. Therefore, the existing entertainment tax rates continue to apply for now.
Reacting to the proposed hike, Fatima pointed to the expenses already associated with a family trip to the cinema. “Kaun dekhega fir filmein? Waise hi koi nahi dekh raha,” she said, highlighting that a family movie outing can easily cost between Rs 2,000 and Rs 3,000.
The actor also drew attention to the cost of food and beverages at multiplexes. Referring to popcorn prices, she said, “Popcorn only costs Rs 1,000.” She further noted that movie tickets themselves can cost several hundred rupees, meaning the total expense can increase considerably once food and other costs are included.
Fatima also raised concerns about the changing cinema landscape, particularly the decline of single-screen theatres. “It is also very classist I must say because single screens are over, so you have already alienated your audience,” she said.
The proposed tax revision also covers non-AC cinema halls and performing arts events. Entertainment tax on non-AC cinemas is proposed to increase from Rs 45 to Rs 200 per ticket, while the tax on performing arts events, including plays and concerts, could rise from Rs 50 to Rs 100.
For now, the proposed rates remain subject to the required approval and notification, while the existing rates continue to apply.
