Mohanlal Begins Filming for the Highly Anticipated Drishyam 3

The saga of Georgekutty is set to resume as the cameras rolled for Drishyam 3 on Monday, marked by a traditional pooja ceremony at Sree Narayana Law College in Kochi. Helmed once again by Jeethu Joseph and produced by Antony Perumbavoor’s Aashirvad Cinemas, the film sees Mohanlal reprising the role that has become one of the most iconic in his illustrious career.

The timing of the launch is symbolic. Just days before, Mohanlal was honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, becoming only the second Malayali actor after Adoor Gopalakrishnan to receive the accolade. For a star who has shaped Malayalam cinema for decades, the alignment of legacy and a new cinematic chapter adds an extra layer of significance to the project.

For director Jeethu Joseph, the focus is not on spectacle but on depth. “This story doesn’t try to outdo the earlier films. It’s about where Georgekutty’s family stands a few years down the line,” he said at the launch. The filmmaker has long maintained that Drishyam is less about a whodunnit and more about a family drama layered with suspense, exploring moral dilemmas and human emotions.

Mohanlal, teasing his return, hinted that Georgekutty will “once again stir trouble,” promising the same mix of tension, moral ambiguity, and relatable family dynamics that made the franchise a cultural phenomenon. With its universal themes and tight storytelling, Drishyam has transcended linguistic and regional boundaries, inspiring remakes in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, resonating with audiences across India.

While details about the third installment remain under wraps—from casting to release timelines—Jeethu Joseph confirmed that filming and post-production schedules will dictate the final release. What is certain is that the story will continue to revolve around Georgekutty’s household and the ongoing consequences of one irreversible act.

From the 2013 original that redefined Malayalam cinema to the 2021 sequel that expanded its narrative scope, the Drishyam franchise has masterfully balanced crime, conscience, and family drama. As the third chapter begins filming, its launch alongside Mohanlal’s Phalke recognition underscores both the enduring legacy of the franchise and the actor’s remarkable place in Indian cinema.
