Actor Rajkummar Rao is set to make a powerful shift in his cinematic journey with the upcoming crime drama Maalik. The intense teaser, released on Thursday by Tips Films, offers a gripping glimpse into the ruthless rise of a man from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of power, set against the backdrop of 1988 Allahabad.
The teaser begins with Rajkummar’s character delivering a chilling statement: “There are two types of people in society. One who sweat to earn their bread, and the other who sweat and bleed to snatch their due.” Immediately after, viewers witness the brutal murder of a man in broad daylight—Rajkummar’s character coldly shoots and stabs his victim before setting the body ablaze. Dressed in a blood-soaked white kurta, he declares, “I was not born a Maalik but I will become one,” signaling his ruthless determination to climb to the top by any means necessary.
Despite his violent persona, the teaser also hints at a complex character who commands both loyalty and respect from those around him, establishing him as a beloved yet feared leader. This role marks a significant departure for Rajkummar, who is known for his versatile performances in films like Stree 2, Srikanth, Mr & Mrs Mahi, and Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video.
Director Pulkit, who recently helmed Dedh Bigha Zameen starring Pratik Gandhi and Bhakshak with Bhumi Pednekar, takes the reins for Maalik, bringing his signature gritty style to the project. The film is produced by Kumar Taurani and Jay Shewakramani under the banners of Tips Films and Northern Lights Films.
The musical score by Sachin Sanghvi and Jigar Saraiya, combined with lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, promises to add emotional depth to the film’s raw narrative.
Slated for release on July 11, Maalik is eagerly awaited by fans keen to see Rajkummar explore this darker, more intense persona.
Alongside Maalik, Rajkummar is also gearing up for his role in the upcoming Netflix comedy Toaster, showcasing his ability to effortlessly switch between genres.
With Maalik, Rajkummar Rao promises a powerful performance that delves deep into the gritty underworld, making it one of the most anticipated films of the year.
