It’s Official: Deepika Padukone Parts Ways with Kalki 2898 AD Franchise

When Kalki 2898 AD hit the screens, it wasn’t just the grand visuals and star power that grabbed attention. Deepika Padukone, playing Sumathi—the mother of Kalki—brought a sense of heart and gravity to the otherwise futuristic saga. Her presence helped shape the emotional core of Nag Ashwin’s ambitious film.

But now, as the buzz around its sequel builds, the makers have confirmed that Deepika will not be returning. Vyjayanthi Movies shared an official note, explaining that despite the long journey of the first film, they couldn’t find a working partnership for the next one. “A film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves complete commitment,” the statement read, as they wished her well in her future endeavors.

For fans, this comes as a surprise. Deepika’s character wasn’t just a side role—it was pivotal. She embodied the prophecy, the mother who would bring forth the final avatar of Vishnu. To imagine the sequel without her feels almost incomplete, and speculation has already begun about who might replace her.

Kalki 2898 AD is not the only project she has stepped away from recently.  She also parted ways with Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit. Rumors suggested creative differences over her schedule and remuneration, and soon after, the director shared a cryptic post hinting at broken trust. Many interpreted it as a veiled response to her exit.

Then came The Intern. Deepika was supposed to headline the Hindi remake alongside Amitabh Bachchan, but reports now suggest she will stay attached only as a producer and not as the lead actress.

On the surface, it may look like a series of setbacks. But for those who have followed Deepika’s journey, it also signals something else: a shift in priorities. At this stage in her career, she seems to be choosing quality over quantity, taking her time to align with stories and filmmakers she truly believes in.

And she isn’t slowing down. A big collaboration with director Atlee and superstar Allu Arjun is on the cards, promising to be one of the most anticipated films in the coming years. She also has a special cameo in Shah Rukh Khan’s King, which fans are eagerly waiting for.

So while her exit from Kalki 2898 AD may feel like a loss, Deepika is clearly charting her own course. One that blends her instincts as a performer with her growing influence as a producer. In an industry where stars often chase back-to-back releases, her choices stand out—showing that sometimes stepping back is also a way of moving forward.
