Acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has revealed the title and first teaser of his upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga, offering audiences a glimpse into an emotional love story set against the backdrop of history. The film features a compelling ensemble cast including Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari, and Vedang Raina.
The teaser introduces viewers to a layered narrative that moves between the present and the past. It begins with Diljit’s character sitting beside an elderly, bedridden man portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah. He narrates a story of a love that has lived in the old man’s memory for more than seven decades.
The story then shifts to an earlier time, bringing into focus the characters played by Vedang Raina and Sharvari. Through brief yet evocative glimpses, the teaser portrays their young romance as it begins to blossom. However, their relationship soon faces an unexpected disruption as the events of the Partition of India force migration and separation, dramatically altering the course of their lives.
The narrative eventually returns to the present timeline, where Diljit appears to be projecting a film for his grandfather, hinting that the footage may hold the key to the elderly man’s lost love story. The teaser ends on a poignant moment, showing Vedang’s character running away while shouting the line, “Main vaapas aaunga” (I will come back).
Adding a lighter touch to the emotional narrative, the final moment features Diljit humorously saying, “Zinda bache toh like, comment and subscribe. #Partition.”
Speaking about the film, Imtiaz Ali reflected on the themes that inspired the story. He questioned whether love can truly be lost and whether a sense of home can ever be erased from someone’s heart. According to the filmmaker, migration is one of the defining stories of the past century, and he feels privileged to bring such a narrative to the screen. He shared that while the film is fictional, it draws heavily from real stories of people who lived through the upheaval of Partition.
Ali also emphasized that while history carries its share of pain and displacement, the memories of love and belonging often endure across generations, shaping people’s lives long after the events themselves have passed.
The film also marks a highly anticipated musical reunion. Legendary composer A. R. Rahman, lyricist Irshad Kamil, and Imtiaz Ali are collaborating once again— a creative trio responsible for several memorable soundtracks in Indian cinema. Adding to the excitement, Diljit Dosanjh will lend his voice to one of the songs in the film, marking his first musical collaboration with the trio.
Main Vaapas Aaunga is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12, promising a cinematic journey that intertwines romance, nostalgia, and the lingering echoes of history.
