Dhanush’s D55 Goes on Floors With Mammootty, Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela

The excitement around Dhanush’s next Tamil outing has shifted from speculation to action. Tentatively titled D55, the film has officially gone on floors, with the makers marking the beginning of production through a traditional pooja ceremony. Adding weight to the announcement is the confirmation that legendary actor Mammootty has joined the cast—instantly elevating the project’s stature.

Under the direction of Rajkumar Periasamy, D55 unites an intriguing blend of talent from different generations. Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela headline the film as the female leads, a combination that has already piqued interest. Though details about the genre and plot remain tightly guarded, the thoughtfully assembled cast hints at a story rooted in strong performances and emotional resonance, steering clear of predictable templates.

A key highlight of D55 is Mammootty’s return to Tamil cinema after seven years. His last appearance in the language was Ram’s Peranbu (2019), a film that earned widespread acclaim and showcased the actor at his most restrained and powerful. Known for being highly selective about his non-Malayalam roles, Mammootty’s decision to be part of D55 has been read by many as a strong endorsement of the script and vision.

For Sreeleela, the film represents a significant milestone—her first collaboration with both Dhanush and Rajkumar Periasamy, and an important step forward in her Tamil film journey. Sai Pallavi, meanwhile, shares an existing creative history with the team. She starred opposite Dhanush in Maari 2 (2018) and previously worked with Rajkumar Periasamy on Amaran (2024), the Sivakarthikeyan-led film noted for its emotional scale and ambition.

On the technical front, the makers have confirmed Sai Abhyankkar as the film’s composer. Known for his contemporary sensibilities and youthful sound, his involvement hints at a soundtrack that could play a crucial role in shaping the film’s mood. The rest of the technical crew is expected to be revealed gradually as shooting progresses.

Backing the project are Wunderbar Films, headed by Dhanush, in association with RTake Studios. Interestingly, D55 was initially announced under the Gopuram Films banner before undergoing a change in production houses. With Wunderbar Films now at the helm, the project falls squarely within Dhanush’s creative ecosystem—often associated with strong storytelling control and distinctive narrative choices.

With cameras now rolling, D55 is quickly emerging as one of the most closely tracked Tamil films in development. Mammootty’s return, Dhanush’s consistent inclination toward varied and challenging material, and Rajkumar Periasamy’s growing directorial credibility together make this a project that promises substance along with scale. As more details unfold, expectations are only set to rise.
