Valentine’s Day 2025 witnessed the grand theatrical release of Chhaava, a historical drama directed by Laxman Utekar and starring Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj alongside Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai. The film has taken the box office by storm, outperforming Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, which was released on the same day.

Box Office Performance

Chhaava has opened to a stellar response at the Indian box office. On its first day, the film amassed approximately Rs 31 crore, followed by an even stronger performance on its second day, collecting around Rs 36.5 crore. This brings its total India nett box office earnings to an impressive Rs 67.5 crore in just two days. According to reports by Sacnilk.com, the film recorded an overall 50.39% Hindi occupancy, indicating strong audience engagement.

On the other hand, Captain America: Brave New World has struggled to gain traction in the Indian market. The Marvel film earned Rs 4.3 crore on its opening day and saw a slight dip on Day 2 with Rs 4.15 crore, showcasing a stark contrast in audience preference between the two films.

Star-Studded Cast and Compelling Storyline

Chhaava is based on the life of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and is adapted from the Marathi novel of the same name by renowned author Shivaji Sawant. Vicky Kaushal’s portrayal of the legendary warrior has been lauded by audiences and critics alike. Rashmika Mandanna plays Maharani Yesubai, lending a strong presence to the film’s narrative.

Akshaye Khanna essays the role of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, while Ashutosh Rana portrays Sarsenapati Hambirao Mohite. The film also features Divya Dutta as Soyarabai, adding further depth to the historical drama.

A.R. Rahman’s Musical Brilliance

Adding to the grandeur of Chhaava is its mesmerizing score and soundtrack composed by the legendary A.R. Rahman, with lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil. The film’s music complements the larger-than-life storytelling, intensifying the emotional and action-packed sequences.

A Resounding Success

With a strong word-of-mouth reception and a gripping historical narrative, Chhaava is proving to be a box office juggernaut. Vicky Kaushal’s performance, coupled with Laxman Utekar’s direction and A.R. Rahman’s musical brilliance, has set the stage for the film’s continued success in the coming weeks.

As Chhaava continues to dominate the Indian box office, it stands as a testament to the audience’s growing preference for well-crafted historical dramas over Hollywood blockbusters. The film’s success reaffirms the power of storytelling that resonates deeply with Indian history and culture.
