Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur’s upcoming film Son of Sardaar 2 has found itself at the centre of social media chatter, but not for reasons one might expect. The newly released track “Pehla Tu,” composed by Jaani and sung by Vishal Mishra, has triggered a wave of memes thanks to its quirky hook step, which has Ajay and Mrunal counting on their fingers—literally.
Netizens wasted no time sharing their reactions, with many poking fun at Ajay’s well-known aversion to dancing. Comments like “Unique steps of Ajay sir after ‘dhoom dhaam’ steps,” and “Ajay Devgn is back with new kinds of dance steps,” have flooded Instagram, while another quip, “Oscar level choreography!” capturing the sentiment in jest.
The choreography, simple to the point of amusement, involves the duo merely showing numbers with their fingers—1, 2, 3, 4—holding hands in the process. For Ajay, who often keeps dance steps minimal, this approach has become a signature, with past songs like “Dhoom Dhaam” and “Po Po” setting the precedent. The latest move has now joined the list of viral “Ajay hook steps.”
Adding to the buzz is the unusual setting of the song—Ajay and Mrunal’s characters are seen dancing amidst tombstones in a graveyard, a detail leaving the internet bemused. “Why are they dancing in a graveyard?” questioned one user, while another noted, “In the middle of a graveyard? Really? I have seen it all.”
The response online has ranged from playful jabs like “When your toddler wants to learn counting!” to critiques about the visible age difference between the leads, which some feel impacts the on-screen chemistry. A few viewers have also taken issue with the song’s lyrics, labelling them underwhelming.
Despite mixed reactions, Son of Sardaar 2 has generated considerable anticipation, partly owing to the success of the first film released in 2012, which earned over Rs 105 crore at the box office. Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, the sequel features an ensemble including Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal, Chunky Panday, Neeru Bajwa, Kubbra Sait, Vindu Dara Singh, and marks Mukul Dev’s last film.
The trailer is expected to drop this week, while Son of Sardaar 2 is scheduled to hit theatres on July 25, 2025. With Ajay Devgn’s dance moves already stirring conversations, it remains to be seen whether the film will match or surpass the expectations set by its predecessor.
